Road Cleanup Project

Every three months Rotarians, their spouses, children, and members of the Interact Clubs at Lake Minneola High School, South Lake High School, and East Ridge High School meet on a Saturday morning on Hartwood Marsh Road to clean up trash on a two mile stretch of the road. We are responsible for the section from Publix to the subdivision just past the Imagine Charter School. At the end  of the cleanup at least 15-20 bags of litter are piled up for pickup by the county.

The high school students earn individual community service hours towards their school’s requirement. Rotary takes pride in its effort to keep that stretch of one of South Lake County’s roads trash free and clean.

Dictionaries For Third Graders

The Club began distributing dictionaries to South Lake County third graders in 1996. Since then more than 9,300 students have received “A Student’s Dictionary “. It contains much more than words. It has civic lessons, The United States Constitution, biographies of all US Presidents, information on states and countries, the solar system and much more. A favorite of the students is the longest word in the English language (1,909 letters).

Club members present a book to each student in the classroom and discuss how to use the dictionary and the four way test which is inside the front cover. For many students it is their first dictionary and in many cases the first resource book in English. It is a true joy to see how happy the children are to receive the gift. The Project is conducted in October.
